The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has been quiet so far with only three short-lived storms since it started on June 1. However, it is expected to be an above normal season by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
NOAA forecasts between 13 and 19 total named storms, 6-10 of those to become hurricanes and 3-5 major hurricanes. Names storms have winds of 39 mph or higher. Hurricanes have winds of 74 mph or higher. Major hurricanes are ones in category 3, 4 or 5. Category 3 have winds 111-129 mph, category 4 have winds of 130-156 mph and category 5 have winds of 157 mph or higher. NOAA lists the definitions and type of damage based on the hurricane category. Since hurricanes can affect both coastal and inland areas, it’s best to prepare ahead of time with information, plans on what to do before, during and after a hurricane (Red Cross), and with supplies of food, medicine, water and more.
