Independence Day will be observed on July 4, 2025. This federal holiday celebrates the day in 1776 that the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. That document proclaimed that the thirteen colonies in North America were not subject to the British crown but were independent. The document was published and circulated to the 13 colonies before being signed on August 2, 1776.
The day is celebrated with displays of patriotism: the flying of the American flag, and red, white and blue decorations and clothing. Many parades, barbecues and picnics, eating competitions, sports and athletic events, and fireworks both public and private, are held.
