The hurricane season and activity have already begun with Hurricane Beryl striking Jamaica, other Caribbean islands, Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and Texas. The season is expected to be an active one. Hurricane season is June 1 through November 30, although hurricanes can occur before or after those dates.

Forecasters at Colorado State University expect the Atlantic hurricane season to be extremely active with 25 named storms, 12 hurricanes and 6 major hurricanes.

NOAA predicts an above normal season for the Atlantic this year. Their forecast is for 17 to 25 named storms, 8 to 13 hurricanes and 4 to 7 major hurricanes. NOAA describes the reasons why this season is expected to be above normal: warm ocean temperatures, La Nina developing in the Pacific, above normal west African monsoons, and less wind shear in the Atlantic, which would tend to dimmish hurricanes.

Whether the forecast is for above or below normal, it is best to prepare in case one strikes in your area.  The CDC provides information to help plan before hurricanes, including emergency supply kit and emergency supplies that are needed. They also detail what to do before and after the storm.
