Veterans Day is observed on Saturday, November 11, 2023. The holiday honors U.S. Armed Forces military veterans past and present, no matter when or where they served.
The holiday was originally called Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I, which occurred when a cease fire agreement went into effect at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918. That was the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.
Although the holiday was moved to the fourth Monday in October in 1968, it was changed back to November 11 due to the historic significance of the date. For more on the history of Veterans Day, go to the History of Veterans Day.
