Memorial Day 2023 will be observed on Monday, May 29. It is a federal holiday held on the last Monday in May each year. Memorial Day honors American military personnel who died in all wars.
Originally called Decoration Day because flowers and decorations were placed on the graves of those who died in the Civil War, it became known as Memorial Day. Many still place flowers and flags on graves to honor those who perished in wars.
It has also become the unofficial start of summer, with parades, picnics, parties and cookouts along with visiting cemeteries and displaying the American flag.
