We celebrate our Independence Day on July 4. It is the day in 1776 that the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. It was officially signed August 2, 1776, after copies of the declaration had been distributed among the 13 colonies.
What is the Declaration of Independence? It declared that the 13 colonies were the thirteen “united States of America” and stated the reasons why they chose to become free of British rule. They included a long list of grievances against the British king. The complete transcript can be read here along with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
The day is celebrated with parades, barbecues, concerts, fireworks, flags, and dressing in red, white and blue.
